Indiana man arrested for drug-laced 'SweetTarts'
BARTHOLOMEW COUNTY, Ind. (WKRC) – Police are warning parents to keep an eye out for a drug known as “Xanie Tarts.”
According to WTHR-TV, these pills look like the popular SweetTart candies and even use the logo for the company.
Police evidence bags have determined that this is in fact not a SweetTart. Deputies first discovered the drugs inside a 17-year old’s shoe at Columbus High School in Indiana and found them to be quite suspicious.
“Different color here,” said Bartholomew County Sheriff Matthew A. Myers. “It looks like maybe a liquid had been put on those but they look like candy.”
They are SweetTarts mixed with Xanax, known as an anti-anxiety drug. Side effects include drowsiness, lack of coordination, and loss of memory.
“We are very concerned that someone might overdose if they eat the candy unaware that it has been laced with drugs,” said Sheriff Myers, via CBS4.
But Lt. Randy Ratliff of Greenfield Police said, "We don't know exactly what we've got at this point in time from the search warrant but we've heard rumors of heroin, ecstasy, methamphetamine, liquid THC."
"The biggest concern is a kid could accidentally pick one up if they find it laying somewhere and pop it in their mouth and have a very bad reaction to it," Lt. Ratliff said.
A man in Greenfield was arrested this week, accused of making and distributing the "Xanie Tarts" drugs.
Jeramie Smith, 30, faces felony drug charges and is being held on $20,000 cash bond.
