WASHINGTON (Sinclair Broadcast Group) -- Special counsel Robert Mueller is among those being sued by President Trump's former campaign chairman Paul Manafort.

Manafort, who is also suing Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein and the Department of Justice, is alleging that the DOJ went against the law in appointing Mueller to investigate Trump associates for possible collusion with Russia.

Manafort believes Mueller exceeded his authority by investigating matters that weren't related to Russia's potential role in the 2016 presidential election.

The lawsuit says, "the actions of DOJ and Mr. Rosenstein in issuing the Appointment Order, and Mr. Mueller's actions pursuant to the authority the Order granted him, were arbitrary, capricious, and not in accordance with the law."

Manafort brought up the suit in the US District Court in Washington, D.C. He was previously charged in 2017 with 12 criminal charges of money laundering, acting as an unregistered foreign agent, making false statements and several charges related to failing to report foreign bank and financial accounts.

He has pleaded not guilty and has been fighting charges. Manafort, who was charged alongside his deputy Rick Gates, is expected to appear in court on Jan. 16.
