PORT ST. LUCIE (WPEC) Law enforcement personnel reportedly visited a gun store in Port St. Lucie where mass shooter Omar Mateen bought weapons.

The St. Lucie Shooting Center is a shooting range and store just off Interstate 95 and St. Lucie West Boulevard.

"He's evil, we happened to be the gun store he picked," said Ed Henson, who owns the gun store where Mateen bought the guns more than a week before the shooting that killed 49 people and wounded 53 others at an Orlando LGBT nightclub Sunday morning.

Henson said the store was in full compliance with federal law when Mateen bought the weapons.

Those guns include a .223 caliber AR rifle and a 9mm semiautomatic pistol.

The owner served 20 years with the NYPD as a detective, and described his thoughts for the law enforcement entities investigating the case.

"An evil person came in here, and legally purchased two firearms from us," he said.

"If he hadn't purchased them from us, I'm sure he would have gotten them from another local gun store in the area."

Henson mentioned Mateen had multiple security licenses, and passed a full background check to obtain the weapons. Henson clarified that his shop doesn't sell body armor. Mateen bought the two guns about a week apart.

"I wish he picke no place," Henson said of Mateen's decision to buy a gun for the "horrific" events that unfolded Sunday morning.

Federal investigators say Mateen legally purchased his weapons in the days before the shootings.
