Estranged husband leads police to the body eight years after wife's disappearance
FULTON, Mich. (WWMT) - Eight years after Venus Stewart's disappeared her body was discovered in a shallow grave south of Fulton, Michigan.
For years after his wife went missing, Doug Stewart proclaimed his innocence. Now he has told authorities that he strangled his wife to death in April 2010 and then buried her a remote area.
Doug Stewart is currently serving a life sentence in prison. He was convicted of first-degree premeditated murder and conspiracy to commit first-degree premeditated murder on March 11, 2011, and sentenced in April, a year after his wife disappeared.
When he was sentenced, Stewart predicted they his wife would never be found. On Monday, he led authorities to her body.
Doug Stewart said he feels remorse. He is sorry. He said he lied when proclaiming his innocence.
Stewart had said in an interview with WWMT it was time to reveal the truth.
