Yakima PD reveals officer names involved in suspect shooting
YAKIMA, Wash. - The Yakima Police Department (YPD) have released the names of officers who were involved in shootings that injured Gabriel Zavala.
Jeff Ely, 37, who has served 10 years with YPD, opened fire on Zavala on the night of December 26, after Zavala shot at officers at the 800 block of S. 4th Avenue.
Ely was joined by Efren Morfin, 38, who has served with YPD for eight years, and was also shot at by Zavala. Morfin shot back as Zavala drove from the scene.
Officers learned through investigation, that Zavala had barricaded himself inside an outbuilding around 11 p.m. at S. 12th Avenue.
Zavala finally emerged several hours later after responders used chemical irritant. Reports said he was armed with a gun.
Officers Scott Grant, 37, who has served 10 years with YPD and Matt Sutton, 34, who has served four years, then shot at Zavala.
The suspect was injured with life-threatening wounds and medics took him to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle for treatment.
No officers were injured in these incidents, according to YPD reports.
Reports said the officers who shot and injured Zavala have been placed on administrative leave as a standard procedure.
Washington State Patrol and YPD continue to investigate these shootings.
