Yakima firing police chief Rizzi; seeking new leadership

YAKIMA, Wash. - The city of Yakima is letting go of its police chief of six years.

Yakima's city manager Cliff Moore announced Monday Dominic Rizzi Jr.'s tenure as police chief is ending after he beginning his tenure in May of 2012.

Moore says it is time for new leadership at the Yakima Police Department (YPD).

The city said Rizzi was given 60-day notice Monday to the final day of his employment.

Rizzi was recently selected as one of the top two candidates for Richland's Chief of Police position, along with Sunnyside's chief Al Escalara. The city of Richland decided earlier this month to pass on both candidates.

In just over the past two years, Rizzi was also a finalist for police chief job in Topeka and Spokane.

YPD Captain Gary Jones will serve as interim Yakima Police Chief while a national search is conducted to find Rizzi’s successor, according to a news release from the city.
