Sunnyside Christian student killed in car crash
SUNNYSIDE, Wash. - A school in Sunnyside is mourning the loss of one of their students that passed away Thursday, the school district tells Action News.
The Yakima County Sheriff's Office (YCSO) said 15-year-old Euriel Garibay, a sophomore at Sunnyside Christian High School, died Thursday night in a car crash.
The superintendent of Sunnyside School District says the crash happened at Independence Road and Scoon Road near Sunnyside.
According to deputies, Jose Argueta Sosa, 18, was driving a Mitsubishi Galant around 9:55 p.m. heading north at Scoon where he failed to stop at a stop sign at Independence, t-boning a Mitsubishi Eclipse in the intersection.
Deputies said the crash forced both cars off the road.
Garibay, who was a passenger in the Eclipse, is believed to have been killed on impact, according to reports.
YCSO's Traffic Division and the Washington State Patrol are investigating this crash. Authorities say any charges determined will be forwarded to the Prosecutor's Office once the investigation is complete.
Deputies say this is the fourth fatal collision in the Yakima lower valley area in the past few weeks involving two vehicles in which one of the causing drivers did not stop at a stop sign.
