Police: use these steps to avoid car theft
YAKIMA, Wash. - The Yakima Police Department (YPD) is encouraging car owners to use some simple tools to avoid having their cars broken into.
“There has been an increase lately in the number of reported car prowls in Yakima,” said YPD Lieutenant Shawn Boyle. “Car owners can reduce the chances of their car being broken into by making it less of a target.”
Some of the steps YPD says could be very helpful include:
- Making sure your car is locked
- Not leaving valuable items in site
- Avoid parking in isolated areas
- Making sure you are in a well lit area
“People can also help by reporting any suspicious activity around cars parked in their neighborhood, at their workplace, or really anywhere they might be,” said Boyle.
If you see any suspicious activity around cars YPD encourages you to call 9-1-1.
Tips can also be reported to the Yakima County Crime Stoppers.
