YAKIMA, Wash. - A man is dead after a SWAT officer shot him while he was barricaded in a home, firing shots at responding officers.

Reports came into the Yakima Police Department (YPD) of a 28-year-old intoxicated man who allegedly shot two people. When officers arrived at the 300 block of W. Pierce Street around 7 p.m. December 25, the suspect was holding a gun to his head and was threatening to shoot himself.

Officers called for extra units from YPD and the Benton County Regional SWAT team. After police officers backed away from the home, the suspect fired shots at them from inside the house.

According to reports, the suspect continued to fire shots at officers over the next five hours while police tried to negotiate with him.

Officers discovered two other people were barricaded inside the house with the shooter.

The man then shot at officers again around 12:30 a.m. and a SWAT officer shot back. The suspect died in the shooting.

YPD reports said the officer who fired the shot is placed on routine administrative leave.
