Man killed inside apartment during officer-involved shooting

YAKIMA, Wash. - A man is dead in a police-involved shooting after he had barricaded himself inside his apartment.

Yakima Police Department reports said man was threatening people with a gun in the Cascade Apartments at 20 E Sgt. Pendleton Way. Officers went to the scene around 7:30 p.m. Monday to investigate.

Police found a 31-year-old suspect barricaded in his apartment. The suspect, who was blind, had a long criminal history involving assault behavior, according to reports.

Officers attempted to reason with him for roughly five hours. Police said they could hear the suspect talking as if he was speaking to someone else inside the apartment.

Detectives entered the apartment, and when officers continued to negotiate with the suspect upon entry, the situation worsened and two officers fired shots at the suspect.

The suspect died in the shooting.

Investigators seized a firearm from the suspect's apartment.

Reports said the two officers who fired shots were placed on routine administrative leave while YPD detectives continue to investigate this shooting.
