Hiker, 20, falls to his death while climbing near Pacific Crest Trail

CASCADE MOUNTAINS, Wash. - A 20-year-old man fell to his death Tuesday while on a hike along the Pacific Crest Trail with friends, a Yakima County Sheriff's Office spokesperson said.

Yakima County authorities said the man was hiking outside Mount Rainier National Park off Highway 410 just after noon on Tuesday when he decided he would free-climb a rock face.

After he started the climb he reached a point where he realized he was in trouble and could not climb back down, so he decided to keep going to the top. As he grabbed some rocks, they gave way and he fell to his death.

Crews responded to the scene from the Yakima County Sheriff's Office, Mount Rainier National Park and Greenwater Fire & Rescue.

The man's name and hometown were not immediately available.
