Driver charged with vehicular homicide in fatal Yakima County crash
YAKIMA COUNTY, Wash. - A man deputies say was at fault during a fatal crash near Grandview is now charged with vehicular homicide.
Deputies said the driver, Carlos Alcala-Sanchez, failed to stop at a stop sign and struck another car.
The Yakima County Sheriff's Office was alerted to the accident that happened at the intersection of Mountainview Rd. and Old Prosser Rd. in Yakima County Saturday, at 7:40 a.m.
The driver of vehicle that was hit, Macario Clara-Guevara, died during impact, deputies say. Alcala-Sanchez was uninjured and later arrested for vehicular homicide.
Alcala-Sanchez told authorities he was receiving an incoming call and was reaching down to look at his phone at the time of the incident. Deputies said the suspect admitted to not stopping at the intersection.
According to court documents, authorities evaluated Alcala-Sanchez for drugs and said he appeared to be under the influence of marijuana and alcohol.
Alcala-Sanchez's bail has been set at $15,000.
