Cousin who was shot by neighbor over dog poop last week speaks out

YAKIMA, Wash.- "The only thing I thought about was my son. To live for my son and God was with me. That's what I was caring about the most," said cousin Michael Bretches

Bretches is one of the three shot last week, says the situation that day happened so fast, at first he didn't know what hit him.

"He shot me from right here, and it came out to right here," said Bretches.

Bretches says the situation turned for the worst all because of their dog going defecating in their neighbors yard.

Police say 62-year-old Henry Castro ended up shooting 19-year-old Shawna and her cousin Michael Bretches.

A mother of one, a daughter, and friend to many is slowly recovery one surgery at a time after being shot four times in the stomach, chest, and shoulder last week. A tragic situation Shawna's cousin Destini Dickinson still can't believe happened.

"It's crazy. You don't think it's going to happen to someone in your family, and then it does," said Dickinson.

Dickinson says Shawna is moving and talking again, but it's going to be a long recovery.

"She can walk a little bit, they have her walking a little bit just to get her back on her feet but she says it's hard," said Dickinson.

Police found the man they say was the shooter, Henry Castro, on that day in his home with a gunshot wound. He died at the hospital last Friday.

Bretches says he would've never thought a small argument, would turn into two people getting shot, especially to someone so young.

"She's 19, it shouldn't have happened. She should be living a good live instead of going through so much problems like she is," said Bretches.

Dickinson says says they hope to get Shawna out of the hospital by next week.

The family created a GoFundMe account to help pay for Shawna's surgeries.
