Boys Scouts in Yakima to host food drive for Northwest Harvest
YAKIMA, Wash. -- The Grand Columbia Council of the Boys Scouts are having a food/fund drive to help Northwest Harvest end hunger in our community.
Karl Beazer with Boy Scouts says around six troops will be camping out at Cabela’s in Union Gap trying to stuff an entire tent full of non–perishable food donation.
Community Engagement Manager at Northwest Harvest Sheri Bissell says it warms her heart when youth are doing what they can to help the hungry.
“It’s a wonderful thing it really is youth helping youth because there are hungry kids, and these youths realize there are kids like them that aren’t as fortunate as them,” said Bissell.
This is the third year the Boys Scouts have collected food for Northwest Harvest, and have helped provide about 9,600 meals so far.
Bissell says there is a high demand of people suffering from hunger with every one out of eight adults needing daily meals.
Bissell says Northwest Harvest has been providing food to several food banks around the state for 50 years now and the Yakima location has been helping out their community for 25 years.
Last year, Northwest Harvest in Yakima provided 6.5 million pounds of food to the community.
Bissell says they support food banks all over Yakima and the state, meal programs and high–need schools.
“Our mission is to feed hungry people in the state of Washington, that’s what we do all over the state and our mission is to do it while respecting the dignity of those that are hungry,” said Bissell.
Beazer says the Boys Scouts believe in giving back to their community and helping out people that are in need.
The scouts will be camping outside of Cabela’s tomorrow from 5 in the evening until Saturday afternoon.
Anyone can stop by with a donation.
