Nicole Kidman clarifies that marriage to Tom Cruise protected her from sexual harassment
(WENN) - Nicole Kidman has clarified her remark that being married to Tom Cruise protected her from sexual harassment.
The 51-year-old actress made the controversial comment in an essay she penned for New York Magazine, writing: "I got married very young, but it definitely wasn't power for me - it was protection. I married for love, but being married to an extremely powerful man kept me from being sexually harassed."
Appearing on the Today show on Monday, Nicole was asked about the remark, and told hosts Hoda Kotb and Savannah Guthrie that what she had meant is that being married so young meant she had a different experience of Hollywood than her single peers.
"I'm saying because I was married at 23 years old, I wasn't going to parties, or I wasn't going out a lot," she explained. "I was pretty much at home. I had my first child at 25 and I was married. I was in a family so, my sense of being in the world was I was working or I was at home."
Further explaining her meaning with the quote, Nicole added: "I think when you're married to a very powerful man, I mean, I'm not in a male's mind but... when I said protection, I think there's almost like a barrier a lot of women don't have - that a lot of people in the world don't have."
The Big Little Lies star wed the Mission: Impossible actor in 1990, and together they have two adopted children, Isabella, 25 and 23-year-old Connor. They divorced in 2001.
She is now married to country singer Keith Urban, with whom she shares daughters Sunday, 10, and Faith, seven.
And asked to elaborate further about her marriage to Tom, Nicole explained that she feels it's disrespectful to Keith to do so.
"I also don't like discussing exes and all of that because I'm married," she added. "I'm very happily married. I have two little girls and I think it's almost disrespectful, one, to Tom, and disrespectful to Keith, so I try to stay in the here and now."
