Cowbell toting Selah Intermediate School students showing their approval this afternoon for County Stadium's new residents next summer. The Pippens, as in those crisp, tart green Apples, also the name of Yakima's first pro team in the 30's. The fan contest winning name for the west coast league college all star team that will begin play here in June......Been pretty quiet at the big ballpark since the Bears last played here in 2012.
Noel Zanchelli "We don't want to just pick up where they left off. We want to take it in a whole new direction. We want the stadium to say this is Pippins baseball. We have all kinds of things for the fans in mind. We want them to come out every night. Not just on fireworks night. They're going to play hard every night on the field. We know our baseball fans will come. Who just want to go spend a lovely evening, delicious food. Have a nice cold beverage."
Ah Pippins, You had me at delicious food....and cold beverage thing. And, the baseball thing should be pretty fun. Selah High grad Marcus McKimmy, the new head coach. Marcus will remain field boss for YVCC before the Pippens season kicks in. And, when it does, Yakima fans should enjoy some high caliber college level ball from Pac 12 and West Coast conference players including from Marcus' alma mater, Gonzaga.
Marcus McKimmy "We've got two or three. One Washington State pitcher coming in. We're going to have a blend of west coast talent with west coast flair. Excited to bring baseball to Yakima again."
