Yakima County schools going green with recyclable lunch trays

YAKIMA COUNTY, Wash. -- There's a new way to cut down on trash: by using recyclable lunch trays in schools.

Some Yakima County campuses will be doing just that. Trays will be bought using grant money from the Department of Ecology.

Half a dozen districts are part of the sustainability program. Schools will be responsible for monitoring their waste to lower the cost of hauling it away.

"We are hopeful that if we are successful, we can expand to other schools," said Yakima County Solid Waste Manager Wendy Mifflin. "That's what we'd like to do."

Schools have until next summer to use the grant money.
