Yakima authorities investigating fatal industrial accident

TOPPENISH, Wash. -- Yakima County Sheriff's deputies, the Yakima County Coroner's office and Washington State Labor & Industries are investigating an industrial accident that left a 22-year-old hop farm worker dead.

Although a common job in the Yakima Valley, working on a farm can be very dangerous. The death of 22-year-old David Alonso Gonzalez-Rebolledo is a reminder of the risks workers take.

Yakima County Sheriff's deputies say David was working in Toppenish on Sunday when the trailer behind his tractor got loose. They say the trailer collided with David's tractor and rode onto the back of the tractor, pinning David down and killing him. Action News spoke with deputies Monday who said the accident will be investigated to see if it could've been prevented.

Action News went to Shinn and Son, Inc. where it happened. They said all workers have a heavy heart on the farm from this loss and it is hard to work on hop harvest right now with this tragedy.

They said they take safety training very seriously. Every worker completes a safety course and gives written consent of understanding afterwards.

Action News spoke with local hop farmers who said this accident shows how dangerous field workers have it. They also don't think people always think of the workers who put themselves in harm's way for these fruits, vegetables and beverages.

We reached out to the deputies who were at the scene of the accident, but they were not working Monday.
