Wapato on deck to get new wastewater plant

WAPATO, Wash. -- Wapato is getting closer to building a new wastewater plant: a facility that would keep pollution out of the Yakima River.

City leaders need to sign off on a $8 million bond to pay for it. The bond would be repaid with a loan from the federal government.

Right now, wastewater from the plant flows into the river with high levels of metals like copper and zinc - levels that are above EPA standards.

The plant is up for discussion at Wapato City Council Monday.
