Artificial sweeteners could be putting on the weight instead of helping shed it study says
(WZTV)-- A study published by researchers in Canada states using artificial sweeteners might not have any effect on weight loss and could actually make things worse.
Researchers from various medical institutions in Manitoba, Canada published the findings in the Canadian Medical Association Journal.
Researchers examined seven trials and 30 cohort studies involving over 405,000 people over ten years.
They found consumption of sweeteners like aspartame, sucralose, and stevioside had no significant effect on Body Mass Index (BMI) when being used for weight management.
Instead, researchers say cohort studies examining the consumption of sweeteners showed increases in weight, waist circumference, higher incidence of obesity, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, and "cardiovascular events."
The study authors say more research needs to be done to evaluate the long-term risks and benefits non-nutritive sweeteners pose.
