YPD planning to add 2nd Gang Unit

YAKIMA, Wash. -- Soon two gang units will patrol the streets of Yakima, as part of an effort to take a tougher stance on crime.

The Yakima Police Department recently re-structured the Community Services Division, allowing more civilians to fill positions. This has allowed more police officers to be assigned to work gang crimes. Each gang unit will consist of a sergeant and four officers.

Neighbors are happy to see the extra security.

"It deters some of the people that commit the crimes, if they know that there's going to be...There's a lot of it now, a lot of crime and it's hard to stop it, but I think it will slow it down," said Melvin and Donna McGill.

The extra officers will allow the gang unit to be on the streets almost everyday.
