YAKIMA, Wash.-- YPD is also taking on more responsibility to provide medical care for situations we see every day. Two officers are now certified to perform emergency medical services. A patrol officer and a traffic officer can help someone who is hurt if paramedics aren't yet there. Often during car accidents, police are the first to arrive.
"I go to collisions all the time, every day," said YPD Traffic Officer James Moore. "And, often times we're the first ones there because we're proactive, not reactive. We're already out on the street so going there if you see someone that's significantly injured, you can immediately initiate treatment and stabilization."
The department hopes more officers will get the same training.
