YPD NEWS RELEASE -- On 07-12-12 at 0033 hrs, Yakima Police went to the 1200 block of South 6th Avenue for a shots fired call. Prior to arrival, dispatch advised of a gunshot victim in a residence in the 1100 block of South 6th Avenue. At the residence, officers found a 26 year old female victim suffering from a gunshot wound to her back. The victim said she had been lying in bed when she felt a sharp pain in her back. Bullet casings were found over 200 feet north of the victim's residence in the roadway. The victim's infant daughter was in the same room as her mother and in a crib at the foot of the bed. It appeared that the bullet traveled south and into the residence via an exterior wall, through the mattress, and into the victim's back. She was transported to a local hospital for treatment. Though she was conscious and alert at the time of police contact, her current condition is not known.

While at the gunshot victim's residence, a male contacted officers in the front yard to advise that he was traveling in his vehicle on 6th Avenue when gang members in a separate vehicle shot at his vehicle. His vehicle was struck multiple times by gunfire but he was not injured. It is believed that the residence was struck by gunfire that was intended for the vehicle.

This incident is believed to be gang related. Detectives are continuing to investigate. Anyone with additional information can contact the Yakima Police Department at 575-6200.
