Yakima teen sentenced to 20+ years in prison in murder case

YAKIMA, Wash. -- A teenager accused of gunning down a man near the Yakima Transit Center two years ago was sentenced to more than 20 years in prison Monday.

Daniel Perez pleaded guilty to charges of second degree murder and a firearm violation. He shot 26-year-old Octavio Rangel multiple times. Authorities say it was gang-related.

Perez was just 15 at the time, but his violent history landed him in adult court.

The judge gave the teen a strong talking to as he sentenced him.

"You've disrespected your family; you've disrespected your mother," said Judge David Elofson. "I think it's at least some encouragement to know that at least you and your brother were the only two in the family that seem to have embarked on a life of crime."

The judge did not give Perez the maximum sentence. He said he considered the boy's age, among other factors.
