Yakima police arrest suspect in officer-involved shooting

YAKIMA, Wash. -- The Yakima Police Department says officers have arrested the suspect in an officer-involved shooting Friday evening. YPD and Department of Corrections officers fired on the man after they say he tried to hit them with his vehicle.

Members of the Yakima County Violent Crimes Task Force assisted YPD in taking 45-year-old Jack Gallagher into custody at a home in northeast Yakima.

Gallagher was treated at a hospital for injuries he received in the Friday incident, and he has been booked into the Yakima County Jail.

YPD responded to the area of South 10th Street and East Chestnut Avenue just after 5 p.m. Friday to assist DOC officers serving an arrest warrant on Gallagher. When they arrived, YPD says Gallagher drove his Ford Explorer directly toward on of the officers.

Two officers fired on the vehicle, but it continued north onto 10th Street before turning west onto Chestnut. A DOC officer fired on Gallagher, but he kept driving west.

Officers eventually followed the vehicle to the 600 block of East Yakima Avenue, where Gallagher abandoned it and fled on foot. Attempts to track him were unsuccessful.

YPD's Detective Division is investigating the incident.
