Yakima named one of "America's Coolest Desert Towns"

YAKIMA, Wash. -- Yakima is cool. That's according to Travel + Leisure magazine. Yakima made the list as one of "America's coolest desert towns."

The magazine recognizes Yakima for being the hub of a thriving wine country and offering more than 100 unique wineries. Crisp apples and hop production are also "cool" factors.

Some people said they're not surprised Yakima made the list.

"When you drive on the highway or the freeway out there, it says 'Palm Springs of Washington,' so they get sunshine many days of the year," said Leah Vergosen.

Yakima joined 13 other top desert destinations on the list - including Palm Springs itself. The magazine also recognized Bend, Ore.; Borrego Springs, Calif.; Virginia City, Nev.; Winslow and Tubac, Ariz.; St. George and Moab, Utah; Taos and Silver City, N.M.; Grand Junction, Colo.; and Marfa and Terlingua, Tex.
