Yakima moves forward with new prosecutor charging unit

YAKIMA, Wash. -- KIMA learned Yakima's plan to cut court costs is taking shape.

Yakima will be holding interviews next week for a new prosecutor. It's part of Yakima's plan for a new charging unit and diversion program.

The unit would choose which cases to prosecute and hopefully cut workloads.

The changes come after a state mandate limited caseloads for public defenders.

Yakima plans to spend up to $70,000 on the new post.
