Yakima moves ahead with proposed smoking ban by writing legislation

YAKIMA, Wash. -- City council voted to create legislation that will ban smoking at special events, city parks and playgrounds.

Once the legislation is written council will take a formal vote on it.

An infraction would likely be a police citation.

Those that showed up to the public hearing, were in favor.

"Parks are for kids, or course grown-ups too, but like Miller Park is full of kids. I don't think it's a good idea to have people sit around and smoke marijuana or smoke while the kids are playing and trying to enjoy themselves," said one community member.

The legislation should be written in the next few weeks.
