Yakima firefighters said they're grateful to accept monetary donations
YAKIMA, Wash. - The Yakima Fire Department is letting the public know what to donate as many are interested in assisting hard working firefighters.
The fire department (YFD) has been receiving many calls and requests from the public asking how they can help as the ongoing fire season remains intense for local and regional firefighters.
Fire officials are informing those interested in donating to fire departments that items such as water, snacks and goods are provided during larger, or State Mobilization fires through established contracts.
A YFD statement said the community support to help men and women fighting the fires is overwhelming and unannounced supplies or goodies can create another logistical problem, finding a place to store truck loads of goods that could spoil or become contaminated, or a donations of unneeded items require pulling firefighters from the fire to manage.
"Sometimes it makes it really difficult for the fire based managers when there's a lot of things that show up. Like a semi-truck load of water, toiletries, food and things of that sort. It requires someone off of that fire line to go manage that, something that's unexpected within the fire," said by Yakima Department Captain Jeff Pfaff.
While food and hygiene products are appreciated, you can help firefighters now by making a monetary donation to Kittitas County Fire & Rescue and the Yakima County Fire District.
"By donating cash to those organizations, or donating a check to those organizations, what it does is allow them to spend money to help the resources that are there and keep that community thriving," said Pfaff.
