Yakima County Jail inmate dies

YAKIMA COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS NEWS RELEASE -- On 5-26-14 at approximately 2226 hours inmate Douglas Kemp was found by Yakima County Corrections Officers unresponsive in his cell. Kemp was found with a towel tied around his neck and an upper bunk. Officers performed CPR until medical staff arrived and took over. Kemp was transported to Yakima Regional Hospital by ambulance. He was pronounced deceased on 5/27/14 at approximately 8:35 hours.

At the time of the incident Kemp was housed by himself in a cell on the fourth floor of the Main Jail. The unit where Kemp was housed requires cell checks be done on 1/2 hour intervals. Officers last conducted a routine cell check of Kemp's housing at approximately 2155 hours.

Kemp entered into custody on June 20, 2013. He was being on held on charges of Burglary 1, Assault 2, Attempted Murder 1, Assault 1, and Kidnapping 2. There were no noted issues while Kemp was in custody.

The Yakima County Sheriff's Office is investigating. An autopsy has been scheduled for 5/29/14 to determine the cause of death.

The Yakima County Department of Corrections is conducting an independent internal investigation.
