Yakima car thefts jump significantly

YAKIMA, Wash. -- Action News learned Yakima car thefts have jumped significantly in the last two years.

In 2011, nearly 700 cars were stolen in Yakima. But last year, that number spiked to more 1,000.

"Recently when we bought a car, we purchased that extra insurance because cars are stolen all the time," said Celia Butterfield.

YPD said it's the same handful of thieves that are responsible for the majority of car thefts. Cars are often targeted for the valuables inside like jewelry and electronics.
