Woman dead after two vehicle crash near Wapato
WAPATO, Wash. —
A woman died Sunday afternoon after a car hit the vehicle she was a passenger in.
According to the Washington State Patrol, the victim has been identified as Maria Gonzalez-Tapia,47, of Wapato.
The collision took place 12:50 P.M. on the 300 block of Hoffer Road, near the Wapato city limits.
Officials say a 26-year-old driver from Everett was going westbound on Hoffer Road at a high rate of speed when his car struck another vehicle turning left onto Hoffer from Horschel Road.
Gonzalez-Tapia died at the scene.
The driver of the car she was in was also injured and taken to Virginia Mason Memorial Hospital.
UPDATE: Upon further investigation, it was determined that both Gonzalez-Tapia and the driver were both wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash after investigators initially believed both were not.
WSP says the cause is under investigation and charges are pending.
