WinCo Foods opens in Union Gap
UNION GAP, Wash. - WinCo Foods has opened its doors to customers in the Yakima Valley.
The new grocery store in Union Gap opened on the morning of April 12, 2018 to hundreds of eager customers lined outside the door.
The new 84,000 square foot store on Longfibre Road is the 22nd WinCo location to open in the state of Washington.
WinCo Foods Spokesperson Noah Fleisher said the grocery store is known for its low prices and you don't need a membership to shop there, though they don't take credit cards.
"We're the low price grocery leader," Fleisher said. "We absolutely tailor our model to making sure that customers get the lowest possible price that they can."
Some members of the community were more than excited for opening day such as Michelle Devita who got to the store at 7:45 a.m. and was the first customer inside.
"We live here in Yakima but we have traveled in the past to Richland just to go to WinCo," Devita said. "So just wanted to check out the new store and get a couple of their deals. "
She said she likes that WinCo has cheap prices and bulk food items.
"I think it's going to be a great addition to our community," she said.
Fleisher said opening a location in Union Gap has been a long time coming.
"That speaks not only to the patience of the people here but the process of WinCo," he said. "We don't build and open unless we are absolutely sure that this is the right place for WinCo, so we are absolutely sure."
Construction began from the end of summer of 2017 through the beginning of this year.
Late in January, Union Gap city leaders said the location was looking to fill 180 positions in areas including maintenance, stocking, deli service and more.
The employee-owned store is currently the only grocery store in the Yakima area with 24/7 service.
