White Swan student receives statewide recognition for artwork
OLYMPIA, Wash. -- A White Swan tenth-grader is receiving statewide recognition for her artwork.
Jocelyn Mardel's pen-and-ink piece "Bear" won the OSPI Choice award at the 2014 Superintendent's High School Art Show in Olympia. Her work also received the honorary Governor's Choice Award as Gov. Jay Inslee's personal favorite.
Mardel is among 15 statewide winners who will be honored at a reception in Olympia on May 16.
Mardel will receive $200 for her piece, which will become part of a permanent collection.
"Bear" is one of five works by Yakima County students that appeared at the state show. It was the first piece by a White Swan High student since 2004 to reach the show.
The art will remain on display in Olympia until May 29.
