What to pack if you need to evacuate
KENNEWICK, Wash. - Communities as close as Ellensburg are evacuating because of nearby wildfires. Do you know what to grab if you were told your family had to get out right now?
Experts recommend you keep an evacuation bag packed near the front door for each member of your family.
If you're fleeing a wildfire there will likely be shelter and food provided. Peggy Hogarth from the American Red Cross said instead to use that space for things your family would miss if they had to go an entire day without.
Items like spare clothes, cash in small bills, your phone charger and prescription medications.
She also recommends glasses or contacts and contact solution plus other toiletries,
"Sometimes in communities the stores aren’t open. There’s no way to get some of these items and if you evacuate in the middle of the night in your pajamas you’re going to wish that you had at least one little change of clothes or a better pair of shoes."
Hogarth also suggests packing a list of important phone numbers in case you don't have those memorized.
The American Red Cross has an official checklist for these kits, but Hogarth recommends reducing the amount of water so the kits are easier to haul around.
