West Valley High offers new firefighter training class

YAKIMA, Wash. -- For the first time, West Valley High school students are able to receive academic credit while training to become a firefighter. The "fire science" class is limited to juniors and seniors. West Valley is one of just two schools in the state to have this program inside the school.

"I wouldn't have time otherwise to take it outside school so I'm really glad it's actually a class in school," said West Valley High School junior Ember Dodd.

Upon completing the course, high school juniors can apply to be cadets and seniors can apply to become firefighters after graduation.
