Watch your change! Thousands of dollars go unclaimed at airports

CENTRAL WASHINGTON, Wash. -- The next time you pass through airport security, you could be giving Uncle Sam some extra money and not even know it!

Last year, more than $1,100 worth of change went unclaimed at airports in Central Washington, including in the Tri-Cities and Yakima.

Travelers are often in a rush and don't care about leaving change behind.

TSA ultimately keeps that money.

They tell us it goes to enhanced security.

In total, more than half a million dollars was left behind at US airports last year.

*Editor's Note - When broadcast, this story originally stated that the $1,100 was left behind at airports only in Tri-Cities and Yakima. The money actually comes from six airports in the Central Washington region. We regret the error.
