Washington Fruit donating $250K to Yakima community center

YAKIMA, Wash. -- A big donation was unveiled Tuesday for a Yakima community center.

The Washington Fruit and Produce Company announced it will give $250,000 toward refurbishing the Miller Park Community Center. The money will help improve classrooms and make the building more energy-efficient.

Washington Fruit says the donation made sense.

"This is the community where we work; this is where many of our employees live," said Tommy Hanses, the company's operations manager. "And we just felt like this would be a great asset, not only for the city of Yakima and the community, but most especially our employees."

Yakima will match the company's contribution, for a total of $500,000 in improvements.

As part of the agreement, the building will be renamed the Washington Fruit Community Center.
