Wapato family speaks after toddler is killed by big rig

WAPATO, Wash. -- A family in Wapato is still reeling after a personal tragedy last week. A two-year-old boy died after being run over by a semi truck in the family driveway. KIMA spoke with the father struggling to cope with the loss.

"It was the longest weekend of my life," said father Joey Contreras.

Joey Contreras mourns the death of his two-year-old son, Kaleb. Kaleb was killed after being run over by a big rig.

The family is trying to learn how to live without him.

I can still sometimes turn around and look and see him watching Toy Story right there on the TV and he'd turn around looking at us," said grandmother Rosemarie Contreras.

The accident happened in the family's driveway. A family member was behind the wheel and didn't notice Kaleb was underneath the rig. When he pulled forward, it was too late.

His grandmother says Kaleb had a special bond with his father.

"He was so happy. But when his dad was here, he knew nobody else but his dad," Rosemarie told Action News.

Kaleb enjoyed playing on the swing and with dogs. He also liked the big trucks in the family driveway. His father drives them for a living and he still struggles with what happened.

"It just felt like a huge hole," said Joey.

"It's so hard for us. All I can say is, if I knew it was going to happen, I never would have let him go outside," Rosemarie told Action News.

An accident that was impossible to predict. And, a family trying to cope after the unthinkable.

The family is holding a car wash this Saturday at El Faro in Wapato. All of the proceeds will go toward Kaleb's funeral expenses.
