Wapato considers parks and recreation department

WAPATO, Wash. -- Wapato is now considering starting its own parks and recreation department with the city's community center at the center of controversy.

City leaders are looking at how other cities run their parks.

Council members say it's possible the school district could help pay for it.

This comes after the community center closed because of budget issues.

"Before, you know, we did have to drive them to Toppenish. And once they developed the program here we started bringing her here because their school is here and all of her friends and she started enjoying it more," said Shelley Mesplie.

Wapato has no time frame for starting a parks department.
