Survey: Yakima among U.S.'s most obese communities

YAKIMA, Wash. -- A new study says Yakima is among the nation's most obese communities.

The Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index survey found more than 35 percent of Yakima County's population is obese, the fifth-highest rate among the 189 metropolitan areas included in the study.

The Huntington-Ashland area of West Virginia and Kentucky had the highest obesity rate at 39.5 percent. Boulder, Colo., had the lowest at 12.4 percent.

The survey also found Yakima has the third-largest percentage of residents without health insurance among the 189 communities. About 30 percent of people surveyed say they are uninsured. Only the McAllen and El Paso, Tex. areas had larger percentages of uninsured residents.

The report comes from the polling firm Gallup and the well-being company Healthways.
