Sunnyside PD kicks off Block Watch program

SUNNYSIDE, Wash. -- The police in Sunnyside are about to launch the first official block watch program in that city. The department says it's important despite the fact the overall crime rate is down in Sunnyside. Officers hope this will build more cooperation with the public. They think it will bridge the communication gap.

"There's a lot of potential in this community and I just want to see more unity. More people standing together to fight the gang problem, the crime over all, the crime in general, to educate people. That's what I think our ultimate goal is to just unify the community," said Officer Joe Chiprez, who is the Sunnyside PD's Block Watch spokesperson.

Sunnyside's first official block watch meeting takes place next Tuesday in the Sunnyside Municipal courtroom at 6:30 PM.
