Sunnyside educator named Regional Teacher of the Year

SUNNYSIDE, Wash. -- For the second straight year, a teacher in Sunnyside was named Regional Teacher of the Year for ESD 105. This time it's Sunnyside High School teacher Spencer Martin.

It was a surprise announcement Tuesday morning for an auditorium packed with district staff.

Martin is a Grizzly alum and started as a teacher there in 2006. His teaching focuses on STEM classes.

Martin will compete against eight other educators for Washington state's Teacher of the Year.

"It's not why I teach and it's not why I've done what I've done, but it's also kind of hard to take that kind of recognition and be able to keep the emotions under control," he said.

The statewide honoree will be announced in about a month.
