Metal workers assist firefighters in putting out equipment fire
YAKIMA, Wash. - A sheet metal contractor is temporarily shutting down their building due to fire damage.
Workers believed the fire started from a metal dust collector at the Stephens Metal Products building located at 3209 W Washington Avenue.
Crews from the Yakima Fire Department (YFD) were called to the fire around 2:40 p.m., Thursday. Occupants had already left the building once Batallion 91 arrived to fight the flames.
Responders found a large piece of equipment that is used to collect metal dust particles on fire upon entering the commercial building. Reports said smoke was spreading throughout a large open area.
Workers helped direct firefighters in removing the filters before extinguishing the fire.
Once fire crews extinguished the blaze, firefighters remained at the building to get the smoke out.
YFD investigators said previous repairs made to the dust collection unit likely cause the fire.
Firefighters have yet to assess the total cost of damage, but said the $6000 filters in the unit were most likely destroyed.
The owner of the business stated they would be shut down at least one an one half days to make necessary repairs, according to reports.
