Stay away from the pond at Kiwanis park this winter

YAKIMA, Wash. -- New signs have been put up at the Kiwanis park pond with the hope of saving lives.

The city has placed signs around the pond warning that the water is deep and not to play on the ice.

Last winter four teenage boys fell through the ice.

Luckily they all survived.

The city decided more needed to be done to protect the public.

"It's possible for kids to swim in there and they can drown or something so I think it's a good idea to keep the signs up so people won't go swimming," said Raymon Diaz, from Yakima.

Along with the new signs, the city is working on a public service announcement to educate the public on safe swimming.

The city also stressed the importance of swimming lessons for our youth.
