Fire hazards, smoky air affect eastern Washington

Smoky air hits eastern Washington

YAKIMA COUNTY, Wash. - Wildfires burning in the region have caused air quality to become smoky.

A Red Flag Alert is now issued in the lower Columbia Basin, meaning potential fires in the area could catch quickly and spread rapidly.

Gusty winds and dry air will continue through the evening according to an update from the National Weather Service (NWS).

NWS also reported an Air Quality Alert until 10 a.m. August 31, issued by the Washington State Department of Ecology.

Unhealthy air quality levels will affect counties of Yakima, Benton, Columbia, Franklin and Walla Walla.

Weather service leaders are informing the public of poor air quality hazards, saying smoke can aggravate serious heart problems as well as cause burning eyes and runny nose.

They recommend spending less time outdoors if conditions are smoky.

Further air quality information can be found on the Department of Ecology website.
