Rising unemployment for veterans leaves many seeking work

YAKIMA, Wash. -- More veterans in Yakima County are unemployed. Hundreds searched for work at a veterans' job fair in Yakima Thursday.

The unemployment rate for veterans in Yakima County more than doubled in a two-year span. It rose from about 3 percent to more than 8 percent in 2012.

Veterans said they face challenges transferring military skills to the civilian workforce.

"Trying to find a job that can incorporate what I did in the military, that in itself is a little bit difficult," said veteran Steven Hayes.

"We want to help put them back to work in civilian life," said Helen Evans, the Yakima human resources manager for Cintas. "It's a way of us saying thank you."

More than 60 vendors were at the job fair.
