Remains of two dozen indigents sit unclaimed

YAKIMA COUNTY, Wash. -- The remains of two dozen people who died this year sit unclaimed at the Yakima County Coroner's Office.

The number of unclaimed indigents remains rose from 21 last year and 18 the year before.

Yakima County pays local funeral homes $500 to cremate a body that isn't claimed by a family.

The coroner holds onto remains for about three years. If no one comes forward, the ashes are buried in Tahoma Cemetery.
