Proposed ordinance to crack down on Yakima panhandlers

YAKIMA, Wash. -- Yakima is trying to stop panhandlers from collecting money at dangerous intersections.

City council is considering an ordinance to ban donations at the top 15 spots for accidents. It includes South First Street and Washington Avenue as well as South First Street and Nob Hill Boulevard. Some neighbors think the proposal is a step in the right direction.

"I think it's a start. They need to do something about it," said Tyler Johnson. "It's a start, potentially it'll go farther."

Violators will get fined if the ordinance passes. City leaders will vote on the proposal Tuesday night.
