Police: Sunnyside teen shoots self in leg; blames wound on fake robbery incident
SUNNYSIDE, Wash. - A Sunnyside teen may face charges after lying about shooting himself in the leg and claiming it was a robbery incident.
Sunnyside police said they responded to an incident involving a teen with a gunshot wound to the leg around 10:30 p.m. Monday at the Sunnyside Community Hospital.
Officers said the 17-year-old gunshot victim reported being shot on the pathway between Sunnyview Park and Waneta Road after he refused to give up his bicycle Monday night.
Police said they did not find evidence to support the teen's story, and the angle at which the 17-year-old was shot was not consistent with the incident he described.
Authorities said a .22 caliber Revolver as found in the victim's backpack during a search. Sunnyside police after investigating the case was determined to be accidental where the gunshot wound was self-inflicted by the teen himself.
The 17-year-old was treated and released from the hopsital said officers.
The case is being sent to the Yakima County Prosecutor's Office for review to see if any charges should be filed against the teen said Sunnyside police.
